Speech and Language Therapist for The Bridge SEN School (a division of Right Support Management Ltd.)

Report to:

SENCO / Academic Manager

Liaise with:

SEN Teachers, TAs, Psychologist, SENCO, Academic Manager, Social workers and Students.

THE ROLE AND SUMMARY

As a speech and language therapist (SLT), you’ll provide treatment, care and support to students and young adults at our School, between the age (14-25) who are individuals with special education needs, Autism, LD, MH conditions and with a range of other conditions, including problems with palate, stammering, language delay and voice disorders. These can be caused by a range of issues, including:

  • developmental delays
  • injury
  • illness
  • learning disabilities
  • mental health conditions; and
  • physical disabilities.

You’ll usually work as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside Teachers, TAs, other Therapists, Support workers, Academic and School administrative team and will often liaise with students’ family, and carers when developing treatment and support plans.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Your tasks will vary depending on your student and the nature of the problem. However, you’ll typically need to:

  • identify the speech and communication difficulty or disorder
  • assess the cause and nature of the problem, for example, congenital problems (such as cleft palate) or acquired disorders after a stroke or injury, or a developmental delay due to LD or MH conditions
  • devise and deliver a suitable treatment programme, working on a one-to-one basis or in groups, to enable each of the students to improve as much as possible
  • review and revise the programme as appropriate
  • advise carers and family on implementing a treatment programme and train other professionals in therapy delivery
  • monitor and evaluate students’ progress
  • write confidential case notes and reports for the students, as well as information for students, carers and other professionals
  • work within the School team to improve effectiveness of service delivery.
  • conduct personal development reviews with colleagues
  • support other team members in meeting with the objectives set in relation to speech and language development.

Additional requirements

To practise as a SLT you must be registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and must have completed an HCPC-approved undergraduate or postgraduate degree in speech and language therapy.

You must also be/have:

– Compliant with governmental healthcare regulatory requirements.

– Possess up-to-date knowledge of treatment practices and therapy programs.

– Excellent interpersonal communication skills.

– Ability to take care of clients with different personalities.

– Comfortable using a computer for various tasks.

  • Excellent communication and listening skills, to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds, motivate students and gain trust. Students may not be co-operative because they’re frightened, frustrated or disorientated by their situation or their mental conditions
  • Patience, as progress may be slow – involving repetitive exercises to aid students who have problems memorising, processing and retaining information
  • Creativity and problem-solving skills, to design programmes appropriate for different learning styles and communication issues
  • Ability to work in a team, for interacting with Teachers, TAs, Support staff and other professionals
  • Organisational skills and flexibility, to deal with a range of students in varied settings

SUMMARY

Occupational therapists treat disabled, ill or injured students with special equipment and the therapeutic use of daily activities. Ours is a special education needs setting, and hence we would expect the OTs to help our students improve, regain and develop the skills needed for day to day life. They may provide long-term client care and acute client care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducting physical and psychological assessments of students and developing or following a treatment plan.
  • Assessing home and class environments of students and deciding what adjustments are needed.
  • Advising on adaptive equipment to help students with daily activities.
  • Developing physical rehabilitation programs to help students regain lost skills.
  • Preparing students for a return to class and back to learning.
  • Educating caregivers and family members on care required off-school environment.
  • Evaluating results and progress of occupational therapy on students.
  • Maintaining professional knowledge and technical progress in order to provide students with the best treatment program available.
  • Complying with certification requirements of local authorities, governing bodies and/or other healthcare bodies like Public Health England and Department for Education.
  • Evaluating student condition regarding physical and basic mental health.

SEN TEACHING ASSISTANT

To assist and support the teaching of young adults with special educational and general learning needs, specifically providing support for learners with challenging behaviour and or physical disabilities.

Duties:

  • Support the SEN Teacher to provide education for young adults
  • Encouraging the inclusion of young adults with emotional and/or behaviour management techniques designed to develop the ability to behave appropriately.
  • Provide positive reinforcements, praise and rewards to young adults.
  • Modelling, within the class, support strategies designed to encourage and develop appropriate behaviour in various settings, i.e. with individuals and group/whole class settings.
  • Support any student’s behaviour programme and or/ support whole school positive behaviour systems.
  • Attending relevant meetings and in-service training provided by the school.
  • Supervising students that have been isolated from other learners
  • Consulting with parents regarding student support matters and responding to incidents of challenging behaviour.
  • Personal responsibility to make a decision when to take action to restrain any student demonstrating behaviour deemed to be a threat to themselves or to others.
  • Assist in the completion of any completion reports that may occur due to student’s behaviour
  • Provide personal care if required

Personal Specification:

  • Have experience of working with young and mature adults with special educational needs. Preferably teaching experience.
  • Experience in care setting
  • Have GCSE, ‘O’ Level or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English.
  • Have NVQ2 or equivalent in Health and Social Care (desirable)
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the different social, cultural and physical needs of special needs learners.
  • Have an interest in how special needs children and adults learn and behave.
  • Provide appropriate role models of behaviour both in the classroom and around school
  • Really care about students, particularly those who find learning and managing their difficult behaviour.
  • Knowledge of Makaton desirable
  • Knowledge of positive handling techniques desirable
  • Have an up to date clear DBS

SEN TEACHER

To support and educate young adults with Special Education needs at our main school located near central London. You will be responsible for supporting the learners’ educational needs whether academic or functional according to their individual support plan.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach individuals in their homes or small groups of pupils within, or outside the class
  • Prepare and deliver lessons and resources either in the classroom room or at the client’s home
  • Support other staff members to deliver high-quality education consistently
  • Develop and adapt conventional teaching methods to meet the individual needs of pupils
  • Collaborate with teaching assistants to define appropriate activities for the pupils in relation to the curriculum
  • Assess young adults who have long or short-term learning difficulties and work with colleagues to identify individual pupils’ special needs
  • Work with the Academic Manager and other senior members of the school to ensure that the requirements of the Equality Act (2010) are met in terms of reasonable adjustments and access arrangements
  • Liaise with other professionals, such as social workers, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and educational psychologists
  • Work closely with parents and guardians to ensure the best care for their child
  • Organise learning outside the classroom in activities such as community visits, school outings or sporting events
  • Occasionally assist in severely disabled pupils’ personal care/medical needs
  • Carry out administrative tasks, including updating and maintaining records of pupils’ progress, observations and end of term reports
  • Attend statutory annual reviews or other related meetings, such as reviewing Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans
  • Manage behaviour of learners.
  • Provide occasional personal care if required (dependent on learners)
  • Ability to communicate using Makaton and PECS or demonstrate a willingness to learn

Mandatory requirements:

Experience in working with challenging behaviour students

QTS / PGCE qualification or equivalent

Up to date enhanced DBS

Desirable

  • Experience in Makaton Sign Language
  • Familiarity with the needs of autistic learners
